Imagine driving into a breathtaking, fiery sunset on a warm spring evening, listening to a chorus of peeper frogs from a nearby marsh over the wind in your open windows. You haven't seen another person in days. You're overcome with a deep, visceral loneliness. It's all too beautiful.
In early 2016, before I moved to LA, I spent half a year living alone on a remote mountaintop in Vermont, composing music, saving for the city, and drawing inspiration from the natural world around me. One spring evening, I was driving home into a breathtaking fiery sunset after a long afternoon at a hidden swimming hole, and the chorus of peeper frogs in a nearby marsh sung loud above the wind in the windows of my little manual pickup. It was a truly magical moment, and I pulled over to savor the beautiful wash of sound. I held on until the last shimmer of red disappeared from the sky before meandering the rest of the way home, letting the chords, textures and melodies of this song drift in and out of my conscious. When I arrived back at my studio I began laying the groundwork, and ended up arranging and composing sounds until sunrise.
Since that day, I’ve been editing, tuning, designing and perfecting every aspect of this song on and off for about two years. Now, at the end of Summer 2018, ‘Distance’ is finally done.
